Day One

Image
After a long day of flying we arrived in Fairbanks Alaska, where were met by a large grizzly and a large polar bear and the Holland America team to spirit us to our hotel.  After checking into our hotel and we wandered around the streets of downtown Fairbanks. It's not a very big town but it's filled with a lot of quaint/rustic shops and cute little restaurants anything from Thai to Hawaiian barbecue. We've chosen a crepe place where they have cold beer. We walked through a neighborhood to get to a brewery. Lat 65 has a zippy sour and a chocolate-y porter, if you are ever in town!  Our traveling a companions, the other Casto's, arrived before 9; it'll still be light since it doesn't get dark here till 10:00. If it wasn't cloudy we'd be able to see the Aurora Borealis tonight but it's very overcast. Hopefully we will be able to see that from elsewhere. We went to the bar so they c

Day Minus One

We had a great drive south to a Walgreens to have our nasal cavities swabbed! We both tested negative! Whew! We’ve been wearing masks like we did in the early days to stay healthy. I guess it worked! We have to stay healthy during our land portion to be allowed on the ship on Sunday… we should be able to manage it! I’d rather not wear a mask but I will!  I am officially a hearing aid wearer… it’s not on very loud so I’m not sure yet… we’ll see! I will not wear them much on the trip, too many adventures! Paul and I found a great place for a late lunch and it was half off a bottle of wine! Great pizza and wine… The very best part of the day was a surprise! My brother, who lives in Florida, was here on business! We were at the same hotel!!! I, know, right? We didn't plan this at all! Serendipitous! We spent the evening visiting and laughing! So far, this vacation rocks!

Getting Ready

Paul and I have been getting ready for our Alaskan land/cruise for weeks. What the heck do you take to Alaska? We have all sorts of activities planned so we can’t just wear regular every day outfits! We will be flying to a glacier-very cold; we will be ATVing-muddy?; we will be kayaking-wet; we will be rafting-more wet; and we will be going back east afterwards-shorts! I think I’m set with 2 bags and a carry-on. They have stores, right? We will leave home in the morning for the metropolis south of us to get our noses swabbed (Covid😷) and to pick up hearing aids for me….what? We leave for Fairbanks the next morning where we will meet Paul’s brother and his wife.
